Anyone can benefit from clean eating, not just seniors, but seniors should know, it’s not too late to start eating clean! The older you get the harder your body has to work to fight off disease and infection, so eating the right foods and the right quality foods is essential. A diet full of clean foods like lean meats, organic fruits and vegetable and healthy fats is good for anyone at any age, but seniors should pay special attention to what they put in their bodies because these foods have the ability to tear the body down or build it up at a much faster rate than those in their younger years.
Let’s take fruits and veggies for example. There are so many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in these things that come from the ground, they are literally a life giving force for your body. They have the ability to repair cell damage and clear free radicals which helps the body fight off diseases and infection, as well as ease inflammation which is the source of so many chronic conditions as we age. Reducing inflammation can mean the relief from conditions such as arthritis, joint pain, chronic congestion, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and more.
Foods that are high in antioxidants that should be in every senior’s diet are foods like berries (any berry), cherries, kale, spinach, artichokes, kidney beans, walnuts, and pecans. Combining this with foods high in omega 3’s (which also fight inflammation and relieve joint pain, can help build a healthy heart, and have been shown to fight off degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia) like wild fish (or fish oil supplement), seafood, flaxseed, hemp seeds, spinach, eggs and broccoli is a recipe for a healthy, aging body. These tips are good for all bodies at every age, but share this insight with a friend or family member heading into their elder years and give them the gift of longevity!
